So, a three-band night ahead of me I arrive at the venue with time to spare. Before too long we are snaking up the staircase into the venue above the pub. It’s along narrow affair with a very high ceiling. Industrial conduit and pipes thread their way across its blackness.

At one end is the bar, frantically serving the customers itching for a ‘wet’. At the other end we have the stage, it’s of decent proportions until you get some kit on it, then its, shall we say ‘comfortable’. Behind the drummer’s throne is a large AMONGST LIARS backdrop. The kickdrum has the bands logo emblazoned on the skin, its cases are clear, nice, and I notice a DW logo, not cheap kit.

Up first are BLUE NATION, a localish band, OK they’re from the West Midlands’, with a growing reputation for their electrifying performances, are the opening act for James Kennedy and the Underdogs, and, headliners, Amongst Liars. With 3 albums under their belt, and a couple of EP’s, they have a great setlist drawn from these releases.

Blue Nation, a three-piece comprising lead vocalist and guitar Neil Murdoch, bare footed bassist, Luke Weston, and drummer Nick Sharman, kick off their set with infectious energy. In parts, they are known for their blend of classic rock vibes with a modern distorted fuzzed up edge, the band, loud and on point, waste no time in trying to capture the quiet audience’s attention.

The night gets underway with “She’s a Storm,” from 2018’s ‘The Kaftan Society’, a gritty anthem that throws Murdoch’s powerful vocals and blistering guitar riffs at the unsuspecting crowd. The crowd, a quiet mix of die-hard fans and curious newcomers, respond with muted, enthusiastic cheers.

Moving seamlessly through their setlist, Blue Nation delivered tracks from their back catalogue that have been critically acclaimed. “Hand Me Down,” from 2024’s EP ‘Reflections’, and “Good Times”(2018) keep the momentum high, with Weston and Sharman’s rhythmic backbone driving the songs forward. Each track full of catchy hooks and memorable melodies that eventually got the heads bouncing along.

As the set progressed, highlights such as “Time is A Thief,” The latest single, released in May, and “Gimmie Some Time,” (2018) again show Blue Nation’s ability to mix introspective lyrics with anthemic choruses, drawing the listener deeper into their sonic world. The crowd warming slightly, started to relax into the set in this dark, intimate venue.

“Every Single Time” and “Strangers,” both from the ‘Reflections ‘EP, followed, this pair, once again proved the band’s versatility, shifting between driving rock beats and more the reflective moments without missing a beat. Murdoch’s guitar sound was particularly enjoyable, Gibson into a Marshall, it doesn’t get any better, there was something 60’s about their sound and hippie vibe.

“Echoes,” from the self-titled EP released in 2022, gets the big intro from Luke with it being their anthem about men and suicides. Luke told us they collect money for charity, emphasising that guys its ok to not be ok. This is something to be commended as us guys, for some reason don’t like to appear weak.

For their set closer, Blue Nation delivered “Down By The River,” another from 2018. Murdoch’s impassioned delivery and the band’s tight musicianship brought the set to a triumphant conclusion, setting the stage perfectly for the evening’s headliners.

Throughout their performance, Blue Nation entertained the crowd with lots of banter about feet and if you had a dipping sauce in your belly button what would it be. As you can imagine the banter was special part of the set. Murdoch tried his hardest to get the crowd out of their shells, that helped them to connect with the audience, combined with honest, heartfelt rock ‘n’ roll, evident in each song they played. The crowd’s reaction, eventually, is proof to their growing popularity brought about by the undeniable energy, fun and hard work they bring to every live show. If you haven’t experienced Blue Nation yet, do yourself a favour and catch them at their next gig—you won’t be disappointed.

JAMES KENNEDY AND THE UNDERDOGS

The crowd was now treated to a dynamic and politically charged set from James Kennedy and the Underdogs. Known for their fiery lyrics and unapologetic stance on social issues, the band took the stage following an electrifying performance by Blue Nation and set the bar even higher for the headliners, Amongst Liars.

This band from South Wales, James Kennedy and the Underdogs, led by frontman James Kennedy, have been making waves in the rock scene with their blend of raw energy and thought-provoking lyrics. The band’s line-up includes the charismatic Kennedy on vocals and guitar, the relentless Elliot Blake on bass, the versatile Jack Davies on lead guitar, and sat at the back, the powerhouse drummer, Aggy Nowicka. With 5 albus under their belt, they too, have a wealth of material and experience to pull from. Together, they create a sound that is both dynamic and full of attitude.

The set kicked off with “Mind Revolution,” immediately pulling the crowd into Kennedy’s world of intense social commentary and infectious rock melodies. The song’s driving rhythm and sharp lyrics continuing the tone for the evening, with the audience responding with the still quiet enthusiasm to each thundering beat.

As they moved into “Autopsy,” the band’s tight musicianship was on full display. Lyons’ bass lines provided a solid foundation adding a layer of complexity to the sound provided by Davies and Nowicka. Kennedy’s impassioned vocals are delivered with anger and commitment, the song’s powerful message, resonating deeply, if not with the entire audience.

The band continued to build momentum with “Ghosts” and “Outragers,” tracks that have become fan favourites. The crowd once again, slowly started to emerge from the darkness with Kennedy’s constant requests to come forward. Eventually the crowd join in a powerful chorus of solidarity. The energy in the room has finally worked, with fans raising their fists and some ‘dad’ dancing to the infectious beats.

“We Fight Dirty,” a standout track from their recent album, ‘Make Anger Great Again,’ kept the intensity high. The song’s rebellious spirit and catchy hooks had the crowd moving as one, embodying the band’s spirit of fighting against injustice and standing up for what they believe in.

The performance took a slightly more introspective turn with “Algorythm,” from the 2020 album. (There is a newer version of the album entitled ‘Make Acoustic Great Again’ released in 2023.) where Davies guitar noodling’s and Nowicka’s’ intricate drumming created a mesmerizing backdrop for Kennedy’s thought-provoking lyrics. The crowd looking on quietly, absorbing the song’s deeper message.

“Struggles” and “Behind These Lines” further displayed the band’s ability to blend personal narratives with broader social themes. Kennedy’s raw emotion shone through, I’m not sure if there was a connection with the audience, although at least one member of the crowd ‘got’ it, and displayed his appreciation. Lyons’ bass and Evans’ drums provided a rhythmic heartbeat throughout that kept everyone interested.

The set closed with “The Power,” from the latest album. It’s a high-energy anthem that certainly leaves a mark on the crowd, exhilarated maybe not but I’m sure more than one were perplexed. Kennedy’s commanding presence and the band’s tight performance produced a thoroughly entertaining set, have seen PiL and the likes I can appreciate the bands message.

James Kennedy and the Underdogs have a discography that includes the critically acclaimed albums “9iP (2012),” “The National Health Service (2013),” and their latest release, “Make Anger (Acoustic (2023) Great Again).” Each album is a powerful statement on the current state of the world, filled with tracks that inspire the listener to think critically and act boldly.

Throughout their performance at the Firebug, the band’s commitment to their message was clear. Their songs are not just music but calls to action, urging the audience to question the status quo and fight for a better future. The crowd’s reaction was a little underwhelming, the band’s ability to connect with people on a deep level, using their music as a vehicle for change, seemed to go awry, I think the Thursday night crowd were a little jaded, I don’t think it’s unfair if I stated that the band worked hard for little reward .

That said, James Kennedy and the Underdogs delivered a performance that was both musically impressive and emotionally stirring. They blended powerful political statements with infectious rock music which certainly makes them a band to watch in the coming years. For those who crave music with substance and energy, James Kennedy and the Underdogs are a must-see live.

The stage is once again quickly cleared ready for the headline act

AMONGST LIARS, a high-energy rock band based in the UK, from Eastbourne on the south coast, has been making waves since their formation in 2020. Comprised of Ian George (vocals), Leo Burdett (guitar), Ross Towner (bass), James Brummeo (keys) and Adam Oarton (drums), the band has quickly gained a reputation for their powerful live shows and raw, emotive sound.

The band has been busy touring with the likes of Ayron Jones (2022) and T.O.A.D. (Theory of a Deadman, 2023), earning a loyal following and critical acclaim along the way. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2021, debuted their ability to blend hard rock with melodic elements, creating a sound that’s both aggressive and accessible. Their follow-up album, “By Design,” released in July 2024, pushed their sound further, incorporating more complex arrangements and deeper lyrical themes.

The evening kicked off with “You’re Not a Slave,” a hard-hitting track with gritty guitar riffs and a driving rhythm, the crowd were hooked from the start, finally. Ian George’s intense vocals delivered the song’s defiant lyrics with passion, and the audience responded with raucous, if muted cheers. Next up was “Vice,” a track characterized by its pulsating bassline, Ross Towner’s bass work was particularly impressive, providing a dark, rumbling foundation that perfectly complements Leo Burdett’s soaring guitar solos.

“The Shameful” followed, bringing a slightly slower, more brooding vibe. The song’s haunting melody and introspective lyrics changing the atmosphere. Adam Oarton’s precise drumming thrusts the song forward, maintaining a sense of urgency even in its quieter moments. “Story” picked up the pace again with its energetic tempo and catchy hooks. The song’s lyrics, which tell a tale of personal struggle and resilience, must resonated with someone in the audience. The band’s tight performance and cohesive sound highlighted their chemistry and musicianship.

“Ready For This” was a crowd favourite, its anthemic quality getting everyone in the venue pumped up. The song’s explosive chorus and George’s charismatic stage presence and powerful voice were on full display, the band matched his intensity note for note. “Alibi” brought a slightly more melodic touch to the set. The song’s intricate guitar work and layered vocals created a rich, textured sound. The lyrics, dealing with themes of deception and accountability, were delivered with emotional depth, it’s a standout performance.

“Drown” took the audience on a darker, more agonising journey. The song’s heavy riffs and brooding atmosphere contrasted with its hauntingly beautiful melody. The band’s ability to put across such a wide range of emotions through their music was powerful, and the crowd were now fully immersed in the experience. “Cut It” brought back the high-energy rock sound that Amongst Liars excels at. The song’s aggressive guitar riffs and pounding drums had the crowd moving and dare I say some even tried headbanging. The lyrics, dealing with the need to cut out negativity and toxic influences, were delivered with raw intensity by George, who stood up front and central, while Burdett went walk about through the crowd, and not for the first time.

“Mind” offered a blend of hard-hitting rock and melodic elements. The song’s dynamic structure and compelling lyrics once emphasised the band’s growth and versatility. Burdett’s guitar solos were a highlight, adding an extra layer of excitement to the performance. “By Design” continued to show the band’s ability to blend dark intensity with melody. The song’s powerful lyrics and driving rhythm were matched by the band’s tight performance.

The grand finale of the night was “Wolf Machine,” a track that captures everything Amongst Liars is about. The song’s explosive energy and anthemic chorus had the entire venue light in their loafers. George’s impassioned vocals and the band’s powerful performance made for an unforgettable ending to their set. As the final notes rang out, the audience erupted into applause, chanting for more, Finally the crowd show up.

Throughout the set, the crowd’s reaction was positive. Fans mouthed along to the songs their voices drowned out by the band’s powerful sound. There was an eventual sense of connection between the band and the audience, finally creating a great atmosphere the band(s) so deserved.

One fan, described the performance as “incredible,” praising the band’s energy and stage presence. “I’ve been following them since their first album, and they just keep getting better,” she said. Another, was impressed by the band’s new material. “The songs from ‘By Design’ are amazing live. ‘Drown’ and ‘Wolf Machine’ gave me chills,” he commented.

For those who haven’t yet experienced Amongst Liars live, make sure to catch them on tour. Their music is a perfect blend of intensity and melody, ‘Rage against The Machine’ meets ‘Linkin Park’ if you like, and their live performance, well that shows who they really are and that’s down to their talent and passion.

The Firebug Leicester gig was a one to remember, filled with powerful performances, from bands that clearly love what they do. All three bands need to be experienced live. If you get the chance, don’t miss out.
