Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

Having formed almost three decades ago, Balance of Power are back after an extended hiatus and boasting three new members to show that this particular phoenix has risen spectacularly from the flames.

Joining the original rhythm section of bass player Tony Ritchie and drummer Lionel Hicks, the twin six string firepower of Chris Masimore and Stoney Wagner add their not inconsiderable talents and the placing of well-travelled rising star Hazel Jade is a masterstroke.

As an opening salvo for the revived band, ‘Never Be Here Again’ couldn’t be stronger and it’s a forthright statement of intent as it grows from its Gothic piano-led intro into a hard as nails melodic rocker.

Just imagine a jam between Heart, Whitesnake and Giant, all three fired up on whiskey and the naked thrill of massive amps and you’ll get something of the flavour here.

With the album ‘Fresh from the Abyss’ coming in April, this is a barnstorming return that should be celebrated far and wide.
