Review by Paul Sabin for MPM

Sheffield’s The Heavy Souls, sight their influences as “from the Giants of rock and blues” which is a great foundation to build a debut album on. The band consists of Clark Vaughan on vocals, Ben Boswell on guitars, Ryan Jones on bass and Charlie Morris on Drums.

This ten track release (thirteen on the deluxe version) kicks off with `Have You Got Soul’ which thunders in with a pounding kick drum and some tasty riffs. Vaughan’s vocal tone is powerful, bluesy, and yes soulful. `She Devil’ is a slow meaty monster that sounds like it was born in the heyday of rock alongside the likes of Free and Zeppelin.

Boswell continues the mighty wall of thick, powerful guitar goodness on `Rise And Fall’ which when combined with the slow drumbeat and Vaughan’s smouldering vocals gives a brain meltingly brilliant result. The crescendo of drums and guitar licks blended with “Ooohs” and “Ahhs” announce the arrival of `Sleepwalking.’ The hypnotic qualities of this track beg the question – is this a dream track or are we just sleepwalking!

`The Abyss’ sees Boswell’s multiple guitar parts set the rhythm as a gritty vocal builds the track up to full speed. This is blues fuelled rock at its best. `She Said’ raises the bar still further with a punchy guitar part that demands attention and brilliant hook line that cries out to be sung back when played live. Think ACDC with a big helping of blues and soul added.

The deep bassy licks of `Broken’ slink along as Vaughan stretches his superb gravelly tones over a layer of glass shards covered in honey! The sweet guitar solos cry’s out on this track more than any other. Vaughan croons out a massive vocal delivery on `Caught In Your Spell’ that is equal to any of his peers, past or present. This is a spine-tingling track that is destined to be a classic.

`Prey’ could so easily have had its riff penned by Jimmy Page. The lyrics and vocal sound more articulate than a zep track however as shades of light And dark run through the song. The album ends with `The River’ which lives up to the band’s name as a dirty, thick bass line and filthy, rich guitar riff erupt from the speakers. The rhythms are like a hybrid of early Sabbath and Metallica with a soulful groove added for good measure.

So, has this band got soul? Well yes, in spades along with oodles of musical talent merged into a blues-rock soup that is oh so tasty. The style isn’t new or groundbreaking but the way these guys have injected a groovy, soulful grind into their music makes these tracks infinitely listenable. More please!
